A brief history of Sharp

Sharp Corporation was established in September 1912 by Tokuji Hayakawa and takes its name from one of its earliest inventions, the 'Ever-Sharp' mechanical pencil.

Since then Sharp has developed into one of the world's leading electronics companies with a portfolio of core technologies and products which include: LCD panels, solar panels, EPoS products, MFPs, microwave ovens, mobile phones, AV equipment, video projectors, air purification systems, CMOS and CCD sensors, and flash memory.

Notable achievements in the company's history include the first Japanese radio sets (1925), the world's first all-transistor desktop calculator (1964), the first LCD calculator (1973) and the world's first commercial camera phone (1997).
